At STC&S-ICL equipped with the spiritual, emotional, and professional skills needed to serve, support, and guide others in their faith and personal growth. These competencies define the key skills and knowledge that students will develop throughout their training.

It prepare men and women to minister with wisdom, compassion, and practical tools—integrating Scripture Therapy and Choice Theory Connections (STACT), self-counseling, and faith-based behavioral health strategies to meet the needs of individuals, families, and communities, including justice-impacted populations such as formerly incarcerated individuals, those involved in the criminal justice system, and their families.

  1. Strong Biblical & Theological Foundation
    • Chaplains, Counselors, Coaches, and Clergy must understand Scripture as the foundation for spiritual growth, counseling, and chaplaincy. Students will learn to interpret and apply biblical principles in real-life situations and guide others using faith-based solutions.
    • Students will apply Scripture Therapy and Choice Theory Connections (STACT) in counseling, coaching, and chaplaincy to provide biblically sound guidance.
  2. Spiritual Growth & Leadership Development
    • To lead others effectively, students must first cultivate their own spiritual maturity and Christ-centered leadership. This includes prayer, personal reflection, and developing a heart of service.
    • Students will strengthen their personal walk with God and develop Holy Spirit-led decision-making
  3. Faith-Based Counseling & Coaching Skills
    • Students will gain practical counseling techniques to help others navigate life’s challenges, relationships, and emotional struggles. This includes applying Scripture Therapy and Choice Theory Connections (STACT) and Internal Control Living (ICL) principles.
    • Students will learn how to listen, counsel, and guide others using biblical wisdom and therapeutic methods.
  4. Chaplaincy & Spiritual Care.
    • Chaplains serve in hospitals, prisons, military, workplaces, and communities—bringing spiritual comfort, prayer, and biblical encouragement to those in crisis. Students will learn how to minister effectively in a variety of settings.
    • Students will gain hands-on experience in pastoral care, hospital visitation, correctional chaplaincy, and crisis support.
  5. Trauma & Crisis Intervention
    • Chaplains, Counselors, Coaches, and Clergy must be prepared to support individuals facing trauma, grief, or crisis situations. Students will learn how to apply Scripture Therapy and Choice Theory Connections (STACT) in moments of emotional distress and provide comfort and healing through faith-based support.
    • Students will develop strategies to help individuals navigate grief, loss, and trauma with prayer, biblical wisdom, and emotional support.
  6. Self-Counseling & Personal Empowerment
    • Through the Self4 Framework (Self-Evaluate, Self-Correct, Self-Monitor, Self-Adjust), students will learn to guide themselves and others toward personal accountability and self-regulation.
    • Students will learn how to apply self-counseling strategies to develop resilience, faith, and inner strength.
  7. Ethics, Confidentiality, & Ministerial Integrity
    • Chaplains, Counselors, Coaches, and Clergy must maintain high ethical standards when working with people in need. This includes confidentiality, trust, and professional responsibility.
    • Students will understand the importance of ethics in counseling, confidentiality agreements, and maintaining integrity in spiritual leadership.
  8. Culturally Responsive & Inclusive Ministry
    • Ministers work with diverse individuals from different backgrounds and experiences. Students will develop skills to connect with and minister to people from all walks of life while remaining rooted in biblical truth.
    • Students will learn how to serve and counsel individuals from different cultures, communities, and belief systems, including those impacted by racial and social injustice.
  9. Family & Relationship Counseling
    • Students will gain biblical strategies for guiding marriages, families, and relationships—helping individuals build stronger, healthier connections based on faith, love, and mutual respect.
    • Students will learn how tohelp families overcome struggles, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships through faith-based counseling.
  10. Addiction Recovery & Mental Wellness
    • Many people struggle with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and emotional challenges. Students will learn faith-based techniques for counseling and coaching individuals through mental wellness and recovery.
    • Students will provide spiritual guidance and emotional support for individuals overcoming addictions and mental health struggles.
  11. Justice-Impacted Populations & Reentry Counseling
    • Individuals who have been incarcerated or involved in the justice system often face challenges reintegrating into society, rebuilding their lives, and finding spiritual restoration.
    • Students will learn how to counsel justice-impacted individuals, provide spiritual and emotional support, and equip them with self-counseling strategies to navigate reentry successfully.
  12. Leadership & Ministry Administration
    • Faith-based leadership requires strong organization, governance, and administrative skills. Students will learn how to lead ministries, organize programs, and manage chaplaincy and counseling services.
    • Students will gain leadership skills to oversee ministries, lead teams, and build successful faith-based programs.
  13. Public Speaking & Teaching the Word
    • Students will learn how to preach, teach, and communicate biblical truths effectively—whether in church settings, counseling sessions, or chaplaincy work.
    • Students will develop confidence in public speaking, biblical teaching, and presenting faith-based messages.
  14. Discipleship & Mentorship Training
    • Discipleship is a key part of faith-based coaching and chaplaincy. Students will learn how to train and mentor others using Scripture Therapy and Choice Theory Connections (STACT) and the ICL CIRCLE method.
    • Students will learn to guide others in spiritual growth and personal transformation.
  15. Conflict Resolution & Peacemaking
    • Ministers often help resolve disputes and heal broken relationships. Students will develop skills to mediate conflicts and bring biblical peace to difficult situations.
    • Students will lead faith-based reconciliation and conflict resolution.
  16. Biblical Health, Wellness & Behavioral Health
    • Students will explore the biblical connection between physical, emotional, and spiritual health using the P10 Awareness model.
    • Students will promote holistic well-being in counseling and coaching.
  17. Research & Academic Writing in Theology & Counseling
    • Students will learn how to conduct theological research, write case studies, and publish articles on faith-based counseling and chaplaincy.
    • Students will develop academic research skills and contribute to faith-based behavioral health literature.
  18. Digital Ministry & Online Counseling
    • With the rise of online ministry, digital counseling, and virtual coaching, students will learn how to use technology for faith-based outreach.
    • Students will build online ministries, conduct tele-counseling, and expand faith-based coaching.
  19. Professional Certification & Credentialing
    • Students will prepare for certification as Christian Counselors, Chaplains, and Coaches.
    • Students will complete training requirements to earn professional ministry and counseling credentials.
  20. Community Engagement, Evangelism & Social Justice Advocacy
    • Students will learn how to share the Gospel, advocate for justice, and develop outreach programs to serve their communities.
    • Students will lead faith-based outreach, evangelism, reentry programs, and community service projects to support vulnerable populations, including the homeless, formerly incarcerated, and at-risk youth.
