How to Get what God Wants You to Have

The Bible has many verses that talk about the good things God wants to give you:

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him— 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3: 23-24 (NIV)

God wants you to have good things!

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11 (NIV)

Let’s look at how to get these good things:

1. Think about what you want

According to Choice Theory, we each have a Quality World. This is all the images, ideas, and values of the things we want the most. Your Quality World may include a life partner, a certain kind of house, a career, prestige, children, and many other things. Take some time to think about your Quality World and what’s in it.

List everything in your Quality World. Don’t worry about whether it is ‘Christian’ of you to want something. Just be honest about what you want.

2. Ask God to align your heart with His

It is between you and God what He wants for your life. Spend some time praying and asking God to line up the things you want with the things He wants.

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11 (NIV)

Remember, God wants you to have good things! In fact, He wants you to have the best.

3. Take another look at your Quality World

You’ll probably find that many of the things in your Quality World are things God wants you to have. He knows you better than anyone else, and knows the deepest, most personal desires of your heart.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for my sheep.” John 10:14-15 (NIV)

If there are things in your Quality World that do not line up with what God wants for you, ask Him to help you replace them with what He wants. Some of the things in our Quality World come from past experiences or influences and are things we’ve held on to without seeing that they’re not the best for us.

There’s no guilt or condemnation for wanting things that aren’t what God wants. When you identify things, you want to change based on new information from the Spirit of God, you are growing and changing to become more like Him. This is a good thing! We don’t begin our walk with Christ in absolute perfection, we become more like Him.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 (ESV)

When you decide to change something that you’ve had in your Quality World for a while, it may take some time to shift your values. Ask God to continually remind you of what you have decided. You can change your thoughts, which will lead to changes in your feelings and actions.

4. Make a plan to get the things in your Quality World

Now’s the fun part! God wants you to have the things in your Quality World when they are in line with His will for you. Ask for His guidance as you make a plan to get these things.

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; Lamentations 3:25 (NIV)

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Luke 11:9 (NIV)
